While nothing can quite compete with a field trip, the students had a great lesson with Liberty Science Center last week. They investigated how sound travels through various materials.
Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week :
Reading : We continued talking about characters' traits last week and spent time discussing characters' internal traits. We spoke about the difference between characters' internal, personality traits (which describe a character over the course of a book) and characters' feelings (which only last for part of a book). It's a hard differentiation to master, but the students did a nice job with it!
Writing : We started our poetry unit last week! After immersing ourselves in poetry during our last reading unit, the students were excited to start writing some poems of their own. We spent some time making noticings about various different types of poems and then wrote a list poem, or two. We'll get much deeper into our poetry unit this week.
Math : Last week, we deepened the students' understanding of collecting and representing data with tally charts and graphs and how numbers relate to one another on number grids.
Social Studies : Last week, we started our last unit of the year, which is all about American history and culture. So far, we've gone over the American Revolution and how we went from 13 colonies to being called America.
Programming : The students had their first Ozobot challenge last week! They had to create a code for the Ozobot to travel from its house to an ice cream truck and back. In order to successfully complete this challenge, the students had to use two different codes - 'fast' and 'u-turn.' The students worked hard to come up with and execute their plans. All of the students had to 'de-bug' their plans in one way or another, and they all learned a lot about how to program Ozobots. I'm so impressed with their perseverance!
