Parent Visitation Day is this Thursday, October 3rd. Please read the email that the school office sent out last Friday for more information.
As we enter the fourth week of school, we have developed a strong classroom community and are knee-deep in all of our classroom units. Here's what we've been working on in the classroom:
Reading : We've been spending time talking about reading stamina. Ask your child what reading stamina means. (We say that it means being able to read for a long time.) Last week, we talked about things we can do to help us read for a long time. We spoke about looking at the pictures carefully, using different voices for different characters, thinking about the book, and re-reading to make the book sound smooth.
This week is a big week in reading. The students will get their independent book bins, select their own books, and get their independent reading spots!
Writing : While we've been doing various writing tasks since the first day of school, we officially launched writing workshop last week. The students have just begun to get a taste of what writing workshop entails. They're all in the middle of creating their own writing pieces.
Phonics : At the beginning of the school year, we review all of the letters and their sounds. (You may have seen the handwriting sheets, which correspond to the letters that we've gone over, in your child's folder on Friday.) We've also learned about vowels and consonants.
Math : Last week, we went over the number line and learned about tally marks. We also learned a new math game called Top It and got a chance to practice old math games (Penny Dice and Monster Squeeze).
Science : As most of you know, we are currently studying the butterfly life cycle with our very own caterpillars. It was very exciting watching our caterpillars get bigger and bigger and eventually turn into chrysalises last week. Here's a picture of some of the caterpillars hanging upside down, preparing to become chrysalises.
I hope that you had a great week! Here are some pictures of 1-Bu last week :
