On Monday, we had a special first grade assembly during which the curator from The Wildlife Conservation and Education Center brought in some animals and taught us special things about each animal. We met a skink, a tortoise, a snake, a hedgehog, and a couple of bats. The students really enjoyed seeing the animals up close.
After doing lots of research and initial brainstorming, the students went to the STEAM lab to create new baby animals of their own on Wednesday. They had so much fun creating their own baby animals out of all sorts of materials.
On Friday, we had our field trip! Thank you so much for helping your child be successfully prepared for his/her trip. We had a great time at the zoo!
Here's what else we were doing in the classroom last week :
Reading : Last week, we moved on to a new reading unit, which is all about characters. The students have been studying the characters in the books that they have been reading. So far, we've talked about characters' external and internal character traits. Towards the end of the week, the students were finding evidence to support their ideas about certain characters' internal characters traits, which isn't easy! I was impressed with the students' hard work.
Writing : We started our poetry unit last week! After immersing ourselves in poetry during our last reading unit, the students are excited to start writing some poems of their own.
Math : Last week, we went over telling time to the half hour and deepened the students' understanding of collecting and representing data with tally charts and graphs.
