Even though it doesn't necessarily feel like spring yet, 1-Bu had a great time celebrating the beginning of spring last week. The class parents came in and led the students through some fun activities, including painting spring landscapes! We had to let them dry over the weekend, but your child will be bringing home his/her painting early this week. Thanks so much to the class moms for creating such a fun way to celebrate spring.
1-Bu was also incredibly lucky to have another great visit from a special 1-Bu family member. The students loved listening to a book about the little red lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge, and then making lighthouses of their own! A great time was had by all! Thank you!!
In addition to all of that fun, the students also had a fun assembly last week called Firefighter Phil. The presenter told lots of jokes, used puppets, and did a few magic tricks while teaching the students all about fire safety and being safe/responsible in the community.
Even with half days and all of the above mentioned excitement, 1-Bu still managed to get quite a lot of learning in! Here's what we were working on last week :
Reading : After the students got really good at visualizing, we moved on to inferring with poetry. Poets tend to use strong language that make it easier to infer the author's meaning, so we've stuck with poems for a little bit. The students spent a lot of time reading poems and being detectives, trying to figure out what the author of the poem was talking. They've gotten really good!
Writing : After the students shared their autobiographies with others, we moved on to the students writing nonfiction all about books. So far, the students have selected the animals they are going to write about and done a ton of research. I am so incredibly impressed with how well the students are learning information from so many different sources - online articles, videos, and books! This week, the students will use all of their research to start writing their books.
Math : Last week, the students learned all about shapes' attributes and function machines.
