We're quickly winding down to the end of the school year! There's been a lot going on as the school year closes out, and I thank you for all of your participation and support with these activities.
Thank you so much for those of you who showed up to the softball game last Tuesday. I was thrilled to see so many 1-Bu students there. The best part of the game was hearing the screams of my students on the sidelines when I made a good play! The students had a fabulous time at Monkey Around in the Field Day last Thursday. The class moms spent a lot of time getting everything ready, and I really want to thank them for their hard work in making the day such a success for the students. We've got a busy week planned this week as well, so I'll try to give you a quick preview of what's to come. Poetry Exchange: On Tuesday, Ms. Wyks' third grade class will be coming down to our room to exchange poetry with us. They just finished their writing workshop poetry unit, and wanted to share their work with us. This will give us another opportunity to share our published poetry with another group of people! Adopt-a-Cop: Officer Marc will make his final visit this school year to 1-Bu on Friday. While the students weren't too happy to see him play on the Roosevelt team during the softball game, they truly love every minute he spends in our classroom. Reading: We were successful twice last week with reading for 30 minutes, but fell a little short on Friday after all the field day fun on Thursday. This week, we'll try again for 30 minutes. The students are extremely motivated, as they want to read for longer than my students did last year! Hopefully this reading stamina will be maintained over the summer. Writing: This week, we're going to start working on our independent writing projects. The students will get to choose to work on either a nonfiction book, a small moment piece, or a poetry anthology, all on topics of their choices! Math: We will continue to review and extend previously taught skills and concepts this week. We'll also be reviewing a lot of the games we learned this year. Science: For the rest of the school year, we will be studying the rainforest. Just like the ocean, there are many layers of the rainforest. We'll focus on the layers this week. Have a great week! It was very nice to meet with half of you last week to discuss your child's growth and progress in first grade. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you on Monday.
Last week was a topsy-turvy week for the students with no school on Monday and a substitute on Tuesday and Thursday. Suffice to say, they were very happy to see me at the door on Friday morning! Since I was only in the classroom with the students for two days last week, we are going to be doing much of the same in each subject area this week as we did last week. However, below are some quick notes to keep you in the loop. Field Day: Thursday, June 10th is 1st grade field day! You should have received a note on Friday, outlining what this day will look like for the students. Please remember to have your child dress in comfortable clothing and sneakers on that day. (1-Bu's color is green.) Also, your child should bring a towel and a refillable water bottle - both labeled with your child's name! Remember, the PTO is providing the students with a pizza lunch that day. Reading: We were successful twice last week with reading for 29 minutes, so this week we're going to try for 30! The students are VERY excited to reach this milestone, and have been working very hard to get this far. Writing: Early in the week we'll quickly publish our last small moment piece. Then, we'll start working on our independent writing projects. The students will get to choose to work on either a nonfiction book, a small moment piece, or a poetry anthology, all on topics of their choices! Math: We will continue to review and extend previously taught skills and concepts this week. We'll also be reviewing a lot of the games we learned this year. Science: We'll continue our ocean study this week. So far, the students know the first two layers of the ocean - the Sunlight Zone and the Twilight Zone. This week, we'll go down even deeper to study the last two layers! Have a great week! |
