Week of February 25th

We've had a lot of fun in the classroom the past couple of weeks. I can't believe February is almost over!

Thank you so much for all of your support with getting your child to complete his/her Valentine Hearts Project. It was a really sweet moment in the classroom when all of the hearts were passed out and the students were reading through the kind things that their classmates wrote about them for the first time.

Here's what we've been doing in the classroom :

Reading : The students are devouring nonfiction books. It's so nice to see them so interested in seeking new information on their own. We continued talking about nonfiction conventions the past couple of weeks. Nonfiction conventions are things that the authors of nonfiction texts use to organize and share factual information with readers. We went over the index, photographs, labels, captions, maps, and how nonfiction authors use different types of print. As we learn about each convention, the students find examples in their own nonfiction texts and record them in their nonfiction convention journals. We'll keep learning about more nonfiction conventions this week as well.

Writing : We expanded our opinion writing unit last week by talking about persuasion. To start this unit off, the students were simply writing their opinions about various matters. Now, they're thinking about things that they want to change and are writing pieces to try to persuade others to agree with them. It's a lot of fun to see what sorts of things the students want to change. Ask your child what he/she has been writing about!

Math : Math has been all over the place. First, we talked about telling time to the hour. Then, we worked on solving two-digit number stories. After that, we talked about how we can use doubles facts to help us solve 'near-doubles' math facts.

Technology : The students have all shown me complete mastery of first grade Google Drawings skills. They continues to impress me with how quickly they learn and apply new skills. Last week, they used tools in Google Drawings to invent new flowers. We've also been having lots of fun recording videos on Flipgrid. Ask your child to tell you about it!

1-Bu had a lot of fun dressing up as storybook characters and participating in International Day last week!

Here's the rest of what was going on in the classroom last week:

Reading : We started learning about nonfiction texts. The students have had a great time going through nonfiction books. So far, we've talked about the differences between fiction and nonfiction and how to determine if a book is nonfiction. At the beginning of this unit, we're going to be focusing a lot on the nonfiction text features that readers use. So far, we've talked about the table of contents and the glossary.

Writing : We're deep in the middle of our opinion unit now. The students have been using graphic organizers to organize their thinking and reasoning. Then, they've been using their graphic organizers to write organized, complete paragraphs. They've come such a long way as writers since the beginning of the year.

Math : We wrapped up Unit 5 last week and will be moving on to Unit 6 this week. By now, your child should be able to successfully use a number grid and base-ten blocks to add double-digit numbers. I don't expect for your child to add double-digit numbers without these tools, however.

Science : We planted a couple of beans last week in hopes to grow a bean plant. We've got one by the window and one in the hall, to see if a bean plant needs natural light to grow.

We had a lot of fun celebrating Halfway Day last Thursday! A big thank you to the class parents for coming in and helping us celebrate!

Please don't forget that the students' Valentine Projects are due on Monday, February 12th. Thank you for those of you who have already handed them in!

Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week:

Reading : By now, the students have learned about three types of connections they may have with texts - text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. The students are doing a great job coming up with connections as they read, which proves that they're really thinking about the texts that they're reading. In the classroom, the students are using post-its to track their thinking.

This week, we'll be switch gears and start our new reading unit, which is all about non-fiction.

Writing : We've moved on to our next writing unit, which is an opinion unit. We started off by talking about the differences between facts and opinions. Then, we read a book about a boy and an ant. After that, the students wrote an opinion piece about whether or not they felt the boy should squish the ant. This week, the students will be writing opinion pieces of their own!

Math : Last week, we focused on using greater than, less than, and equal to signs. We also learned about measuring paths.

Science : We started our next science unit last week, which is all about living things. We discussed the main parts of a plant (the roots, the stem, and the leaves) and how each of those parts helps the plant survive.
