I am looking forward to meeting with many of you for your child's parent/teacher conference this week. If you have forgotten your time or find that you cannot make your scheduled time, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can reschedule.
Here's what 1-Bu was working on in the classroom last week :
Reading : Last week's focus was all about 'just right books.' Ask your child what a 'just right book' is! In school, we spoke about how a just right book is one that's not too easy, not too hard, but just right. It will require some work to figure out the words and/or understand the book, but you're able to do the work without getting too tired or frustrated. We spoke about the importance of the students reading just right books for the majority of their reading time, because it's the best way to become a stronger reader.
Writing : The students continued working on their small moment pieces last week. We spent quite a bit of time going over how to organize writing pieces. The students tend to get so excited once they come up with a topic to write about that they don't take the time to plan out their writing. This results in writing pieces without a lot of structure. Last week, we spent a lot of time going over the beginning, the middle, and the end of stories.
Math : In math, we took a deeper look at number lines and number grids. The students practiced skip counting on them and learned how to use them as a tool to help them solve various kinds of addition and subtraction problems. At the end of the week, the students learned all about frames and arrows problems.
Social Studies : As we get closer to Thanksgiving, the students have been learning a little bit about the historical background of the holiday.
