Last Thursday was a little bit of a crazy day, with all of the snow falling outside and wondering whether or not we were going to have an early dismissal. We worked together to make the day as smooth as possible and I was extremely proud of the students' behavior all day long. We had special reading and writing workshops that day, in observation of the snow. During reading, the students could choose to read wherever they liked around the room. We turned half of the lights off and opened the blinds all the way to make the room nice and cozy. For writing, we took clipboards and paper and sat in the 'bridge' between CHS and NBC, observing and writing about the snow.
Reading: We finished our schema unit! The students are experts at using their schema to better understand what they read. They've also been making excellent connections to their books. I'm hoping to get a new edition of 1-Bu Reading News this week, which will outline what the students learned.
This week, we'll be launching our new reading unit - nonfiction.
Writing: The students have all chosen the writing piece that they would like publish. They're currently in the process of editing and revising their work to make sure that their writing pieces are 'easy to read.'
Math: Math was a little mixed up last week with the snow, so this week we will start off reviewing fact families and then move on to fact triangles. Please keep the fact triangles that come home with the homework in a safe place at home. They are a great way to review and learn math facts. (The students have other fact triangles that we use in school to review their facts.)
Multi-Cultural Unit: Next week, we will begin a multi-cultural unit in theme study. Early this week, you will receive a project for you and your child to complete at home in regards to your heritage/culture. There will also be a letter coming home inviting you to share your heritage and/or culture with our class. The students LOVE learning about each other's backgrounds, so please consider coming in to share whatever you would like regarding your family's/child's heritage and/or culture.
Extras: The first grade class trip is coming up during the second week of March. More information will be coming home regarding the trip at some point this week. (Please email me if you have any questions. For security, I can't include any more detailed information on the website, but would be happy to answer any questions through email.)
Have a great week!
