Week of May 1st

I can't believe it's May already! The students are suddenly seeming so much older, wiser, and more mature than they were just a few weeks ago.

We've been keeping very busy in the classroom. Here's what we've been doing:

Reading : We continued working on visualizing poems to infer their meanings. The students have had a lot of fun using the strong words in poems to try to discover what the poets are talking about.

Writing : It took a lot of work to get the students' nonfiction all about books finished, but they are mostly all done! Now we're moving on to a poetry unit in writing.

Math : We focused on some geometric principles last week, learning about composite shapes and 3-dimensional shapes. The students have really enjoyed doing tangram puzzles online. If your child wants a challenge, have him/her try the level 3 tangram puzzles on ABCya. (We did levels 1 and 2 in the classroom.)

Science : We've spent the last couple of weeks learning all about desert animals and the adaptations they use in order to survive in the desert. Ask your child about his/her favorite desert animal and how it survives in the harsh desert climate.

Have a great week!

Week of April 24th

Sorry about the lack of updates for the couple of weeks. With Spring Break and 1-Bu being incredibly busy, I don't know where the time has gone! I'll try to recap the past couple of weeks in this post.

We had a fun time celebrating Earth Day last week by decorating pots and planting flowers in them. Hopefully your child's plant is thriving at home! Thank you to the class parents for all of your help with this special project.

Here's what we've been working on in the classroom:

Reading : We've been working on visualizing and inferring with poetry. Poets tend to use strong language that make it easier to visualize and infer the author's meaning, so we've been doing a lot of work with poems. Most of the poems that we've worked with are in the poetry section of your child's binder. The students spent a lot of time reading poems and being detectives, trying to figure out what the author of the poem was talking about. Try it at home! Have you child read you a poem without him/her telling you what the title is and see if you can figure out what the author is talking about.

Writing : The students are just about done with their All About books. Ask your child what he/she has written about!

Math : We started our next math unit, which has a focus on geometry. So far, the students got an introduction to fractions by learning about equal shares, halves, and fourths.

Science : The students have been learning all about the desert lately. Ask your child what he/she knows.

Here are some pictures from last week :
