Here's the rest of what was going on in the classroom last week:
Reading : We started learning about nonfiction texts. The students have had a great time going through nonfiction books. So far, we've talked about the differences between fiction and nonfiction and how to determine if a book is nonfiction. At the beginning of this unit, we're going to be focusing a lot on the nonfiction text features that readers use. So far, we've talked about the table of contents and the glossary.
Writing : We're deep in the middle of our opinion unit now. The students have been using graphic organizers to organize their thinking and reasoning. Then, they've been using their graphic organizers to write organized, complete paragraphs. They've come such a long way as writers since the beginning of the year.
Math : We wrapped up Unit 5 last week and will be moving on to Unit 6 this week. By now, your child should be able to successfully use a number grid and base-ten blocks to add double-digit numbers. I don't expect for your child to add double-digit numbers without these tools, however.
Science : We planted a couple of beans last week in hopes to grow a bean plant. We've got one by the window and one in the hall, to see if a bean plant needs natural light to grow.
