Please don't forget that the students' Valentine Projects are due on Monday, February 12th. Thank you for those of you who have already handed them in!
Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week:
Reading : By now, the students have learned about three types of connections they may have with texts - text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. The students are doing a great job coming up with connections as they read, which proves that they're really thinking about the texts that they're reading. In the classroom, the students are using post-its to track their thinking.
This week, we'll be switch gears and start our new reading unit, which is all about non-fiction.
Writing : We've moved on to our next writing unit, which is an opinion unit. We started off by talking about the differences between facts and opinions. Then, we read a book about a boy and an ant. After that, the students wrote an opinion piece about whether or not they felt the boy should squish the ant. This week, the students will be writing opinion pieces of their own!
Math : Last week, we focused on using greater than, less than, and equal to signs. We also learned about measuring paths.
Science : We started our next science unit last week, which is all about living things. We discussed the main parts of a plant (the roots, the stem, and the leaves) and how each of those parts helps the plant survive.
