In addition to the Week of Respect, 1-Bu had a visit from Officer Paul (our Adopt-a-Cop) and our first trip to the Discovery Lab. Officer Paul taught us about different signs we may see around the community and then showed us his police car. The students had a lot of fun getting to see the inside of a police car up close. In the Discovery Lab, the students learned a little bit more about the butterfly life cycle and then started applying their knowledge about butterflies to ladybugs.
Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week :
Reading : The students got their reading partners last week! We went over how to sit with a reading partner, different ways to read together, and how to talk about books. Ask you child who his/her reading partner is.
Writing : Last week, the students started using the writing folders you helped decorate at home, and learned all about how to use their folders to spark writing ideas. We also went over writing across the pages, rather than telling a story all on one page.
Math : After getting a couple of assessments out of the way at the beginning of the week, we started unit 2. The students played a math game called Roll and Total to practice the addition strategy of counting on. We also started investigating ten frames and pairs of numbers that go together to make ten.
Phonics : We spent all week learning about the short a sound. After going over the sound and basic short a words, we worked on short a word families.
Social Studies : We did a lot of Week of Respect activities this week, but also learned a little bit more about communities and how they are similar and how they differ.
