Reading : As of last week, we have learned the main strategies about decoding tricky words. This week we're going to work on putting all of the strategies together to successfully figure out tricky words and make sure that they make sense. While readers often have preferred ways of figuring out tricky words, I want to make sure that the students' word decoding skills are flexible enough to be used in many different texts and reading situations.
Word Study : Each week in class, we study five sight words. These are words that students should be able to read quickly just by glancing at the word. Starting next week, the week of the 15th, the students will be getting a word study homework assignment each night asking them to do something with the current week's sight words. This week in class, we will be practicing how to do each of the homework assignments so that the students are aware of my expectations. More specific information regarding the assignments will be given out next week.
Writing : The students have been doing a great job with this small moments writing unit. On Monday, the students will have a writing homework assignment asking them to write down possible small moment writing topics. Please sit down with your child and help him/her think of some good ideas of true stories that he/she could write about. These ideas will help your child generate stories throughout the rest of our small moment writing unit.
Math : Continuing on in unit 3, we'll be discussing patterns. Our primary focus will be on number patterns on a number grid and number line, but we'll be touching upon shape and color patterns as well.
Science : Last week, we learned that sound is produced by vibrations. This week, we'll go on a sound walk throughout the school, listening for different sounds that occur. By the end of the week, we'll have begun talking about bats.
Odds and Ends : Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for November 30th and December 2nd. You'll be receiving a confirmation of the exact time and date of your conference as week get closer.
If you have not done so already, please make sure that you either return the Entertainment Book (that book with all the coupons in it) or write a check for $30.
