Here's what we've been working on in the classroom:
Reading : Last week, we worked on expanding the visualizing skills that the students learned while reading poetry. The students worked on visualizing with regular fiction and nonfiction books. Sometimes this is a little tricky in first grade because they books the students read are picture-laden, but we still try. Sometimes our visualizations don't match the illustrator's visualizations.
Writing : It took a lot of work to get the students' nonfiction all about books published, but it's done! Now we're moving on to a poetry unit.
Math : Last week we spent time focusing on word problems and adding two-digit numbers. At this point, I do not expect the students to be lining up the numbers, adding the ones, carrying a number to the tens column, and then adding the tens. If you want to teach your child that method and he/she understands it, that's completely fine, but that's not my expectation in the classroom. In the classroom, we've been using base-ten blocks and the number grid to add two-digit numbers. Lots of students have also developed strategies of their own, too!
Science : We wrapped up our desert unit last week by learning about a few more ways that desert animals survive in the harsh desert climate.
