1-Bu had a fun assembly last week called Firefighter Phil. The presenter told lots of jokes, used puppets, and did a few magic tricks while teaching the students all about fire safety.
Here's what we've been working on in the classroom :
Reading : We finished up our nonfiction reading unit last week by doing some nonfiction research and creating some 'fun fact' pages of our own. Each student found a fact that he/she felt was interesting and created a fun fact page. Ask your child what fact he/she wrote about!
The students also spent a couple of days doing animal research online using PebbleGo. It's a fantastic online resource for first graders and the students really enjoy learning about different topics. If you get your child to the main CHS webpage, he/she should be able to navigate his/her way to PebbleGo. (If not, remind them to click on '# Student Technology Playbook on the left side of the screen, then click on the 'library' box, the click on PebbleGo.)
Math : We wrapped up unit 6 last week by extending our knowledge about place value to the hundreds place. Along with that idea, we learned about the dollar bill because it's worth 100 cents. In first grade, the students are only responsible for being able to count pennies, dimes, and dollar bills because they go along with ones, tens, and hundreds. They'll continue learning about the other coins in second grade. Of course, you can go over them will your child at home though.
Science : We continued learning about how animals use their body parts for survival. Last week, we spoke about how animals take in food, water, and air and how animals use their senses. Ask your child what a white-tailed deer does when it senses danger!
Sorry, no other pictures from last week! I will make more of an effort to take pictures this week. :)
