Adopt-a-Cop: 1-Bu has 'adopted' a River Edge police officer named Officer Marc. He will be visiting our classroom on a regular basis for the rest of the year to teach the students about various ways to keep safe in the community.
The students were very excited to meet him last Thursday, when he visited us for the first time. We were supposed to take pictures by his police car, but his camera had run out of batteries! The students were just as happy to get a close-up look at the inside of a police car, however.
Reading: This week, we are going to take a close look at how readers use their schema when they read. We'll start by creating a definition of what schema is, and then we'll explore helpful ways to use our schema.
*As a heads up, next week the students will start getting nightly reading homework. A detailed note will be sent home explaining my expectations on Tuesday, January 19th (the first night it will be assigned).
Writing: We're starting a new writing unit this week that will focus on the mechanics that writers use to make their writing easier for others to read. We'll start by figuring out what makes some writing easier to read than others, and then we'll work on applying those techniques to our own writing.
Math: On Monday and Tuesday we'll wrap up unit 4 by learning about 'fact power.' We'll begin to place more focus on developing addition fact power. Towards the end of the week, we'll start our next math unit by exploring place value.
Extras: Please remind your child of the Cherry Hill snow rules. The students may not pick up or climb on the snow before, during, or after school. This is a safety issue that we take very seriously.
Scholastic orders are due January 14th.
Have a great week!
