This year, I am continually impressed with how much these students love to read. They get mad when we don't have time for a read aloud and relish opportunities to read freely in the classroom library. I took a few pictures of the students reading in the classroom library after finishing their snacks one day last week, and have posted the pictures below. Please continue to instill the love of reading in your child for years to come.
Here's what we'll be working on in the classroom this week:
Reading : Last week, we finished our non-fiction reading unit by creating wondering boxes to display some of the research that each student did. Ask your child what he/she did for his/her wondering box. If you'd like to take a look at your child's work, the wondering boxes are currently hung up in the hallway outside our classroom. Stop by and see them some time, as all of the students did a great job.
This week, we'll be moving onto our next unit, which is all about visualization. The students will learn how to use the words in the text to create images in their minds, which they will use to deepen their understandings of text.
Writing : We are between writing units this week, and will take some time to work on a few short writing projects. We'll be focusing on writing with description, as one of our next writing focuses is going to require using lots of rich, descriptive words.
Math : Last week, we spent a lot of time reviewing counting money. Many of the students are not completely secure with this skill yet, and that is okay. Of course, however, I would like all students to keep working on counting assorted groups of coins, so that they are working towards mastery of this skill.
This week, we're going to introduce dollars and start counting assorted groups of money with dollars in the mix as well.
Social Studies: Over the past couple of weeks, we have been learning quite a bit about Mexico. The students are enjoying learning about Mexico and the Mexican culture. We are getting ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a couple of weeks.
Here are some pictures of 1-Bu during free reading time last week. Have a great week!
