Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week :
Reading : Now that we've gotten all of the beginning of the year routines and procedures out of the way, we can really buckle down and get working on reading strategies and skills. Last week, we started our second reading unit, which is all about 'just right books' and decoding strategies. Over the course of the last week, the students learned all about 'just right books' and why it's important that they spend the majority of their time reading books that are 'just right.' This week, we'll start learning about what to do when the students get stuck on tricky words (aka, decoding strategies).
Writing : The students published their first writing pieces! Last week, the students colored the pictures and shared their pieces with their classmates. This week, we'll start our next writing unit, which called Small Moments. I'll explain what that is next week. :)
Math : The main focus of math last week was to continue to develop the students' knowledge about and understanding of the complements on ten. By now, most of the students are fairly familiar with the number pairs that go together to make ten.
Science : Last week, we focused on the stars in the night sky. We talked about what stars are, the patterns that people make with them, and how they appear to move.
Social Studies : We went over different types of communities last week (cities, countries, and towns) and discussed the similarities and differences amongst them. We also started talking about community helpers and their roles in communities.
