School picture day is this week. Our class will get our pictures taken on Wednesday, September 29th. If you are purchasing photos, you must have the picture envelope handed in by the first thing on Wednesday morning.
The students were very excited to take out books from the library last Thursday. (They are still in shock that they are allowed to take out two books in first grade!) Enjoy the books at home until Wednesday night, and then make sure that they come to school with your child on Thursday morning so he or she can return them and take out two new books.
Reading : The students are doing an AWESOME job in reading workshop. We've been working on developing our reading stamina (or how long the students can read for). By the end of this week, the students will be getting their own book bins, selecting their own books, and getting their own reading spots in the classroom.
Writing : The students love writing workshop so far. Last week, we learned about what we do in writing workshop in 1-Bu. This week, we'll be talking about ways to come up with writing topics and being brave to write words we don't know how to spell.
Math : We're nearing the end of our first math unit. This unit has introduced the students to the number line, tally marks, and many of the math tools and manipulatives that we'll be using this year. We'll be wrapping up the unit this week by learning about thermometers and number stories.
Science : At some point during the school day on Monday, one of our chrysalises turned into a butterfly! The students were so excited, as a student just happened to notice it occurred while we were packing up. The students know the butterfly life cycle very well by now. Not only have we learned about it through books, but we've also witnessed it in real life!
Discovery Lab : We went to our first Discovery Lab lesson of the year on Monday. We used what we knew about the butterfly and the butterfly life cycle to learn all about ladybugs.
Have a great week!
