This week is the Week of Respect. Please check your email, or the 'important dates' tab on the left side of this page, to see what your child can wear each day to celebrate.
Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week :
Reading : We finished up learning about ways to develop reading stamina. The students learned about using different voices for different characters, thinking about the book and what it reminds them about, and re-reading a book when they're done. On Thursday and Friday, the students got their own book bins and reading spots. Now that the students are reading from their own leveled book bins and in their own reading spots (so that they can really concentrate,) we can officially get under way with how reading will feel for the rest of the year.
Writing : Last week, we went over making sure the pictures match the words on the page, stretching out words you don't know how to spell, and how to use a stapler (which was the most exciting of all).
Math : We finished up our first math unit last week. The students go a chance to explore many of the math manipulatives that we'll be using this year, they learned how to playTop-It and Rolling for 50, and they learned how to use the number grid and solve number stories.
Phonics : We continued reviewing letter sounds and proper handwriting techniques by going over the letters c and d. This week, we'll go over our first short vowel.
Science : As I mentioned above, we had butterflies this week! It was a very exciting week in science. Observing the last stage of the butterfly life cycle helped to solidify the students' knowledge of the life cycle.
