Please remember to have your child bring in a rock by Wednesday, Oct. 4th for our Kindness Rocks project.
Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week :
Reading : We continued to develop our reading stamina so that the students can read for longer and longer periods of time (thus, getting more and more practice reading). We came up with a few ways that may help the students read for longer periods of time. We spoke about sticking with one book (rather than casually, and mindlessly, flipping through one book after another,) closely examining the pictures, thinking about the book, and re-reading books you've already read.
This week, the students are going to get their own book bins and reading spots. They're very excited!
Writing : The students have done a phenomenal job picking up the structure and work ethic of writing workshop so far. They are all working on writing stories about events that have happened in their lives. Last week, the students worked on the very beginning of the writing process - coming up with an idea and getting it down on paper. We'll fine tune that a little bit over the next few months, but so far they're going a great job!
Math : In math, the students reviewed numbers and how to compare numbers on a number line. They also learned all about tally marks and how to represent various numbers with tally marks.
Phonics : At the beginning of the year, we are reviewing all of the letters and their sounds. So far, we've gone over t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, and o.
Social Studies : We're currently in the middle of a unit on communities. So far, we've talked about what communities are and how communities look different and have different rules.
Technology : The students are becoming pros at logging on to their Chromebooks and navigating their ways to our Google Classroom. So far, we've been focusing on refining the students' trackpad skills. We've gone over clicking, double clicking, clicking and dragging, and scrolling. Next week, we're moving on to keyboarding skills!
