1-Bu got a lot done in four days of school last week! Here's what we were working on in the classroom :
Reading : We spoke all about getting our minds ready to read. Just like athletes warm up their bodies before performing or competing, readers should warm up their minds before reading. This helps the reader get as much out of the text as possible. Last week, we spoke about using the title and author of the book, the picture on the cover of the book, and the blurb on the back of the book to help get your mind ready. We'll continue learning about other ways to get your mind ready for reading this week.
Writing : The students published their first writing pieces last week! The first unit was all about getting the students used to the routine and procedures of writing workshop, but the students were able to create some great writing pieces at the same time. Last week, the students chose one of the writing pieces that they wrote over the course of the first writing unit, edited it to make sure it made sense, colored the pictures, and created a cover. On Friday, the students shared their finished pieces with their peers.
Math : The main focus of math last week was to continue to develop the students' knowledge about and understanding of the complements on ten. By now, most of the students are fairly familiar with the number pairs that go together to make ten. The students even learned a song to help them memorize them. Ask you child to sing you the Complements of Ten song.
Phonics : We continued going over letter sounds by reviewing the letters P and L. The students also learned about how to break up one-syllable words into their onsets and rimes.
Science : The students expanded their knowledge of butterflies to that of all insects. We went over the main body parts of insects and what each body part does.
