Thank you for your help and support in reminding your child not to wear Silly Bandz to school.
Reading: We will continue to work on visualization this week. Last week, we spent a lot of time looking carefully at poems and describing and drawing our mental images. We realized that different people have different visualizations of the same texts because we all have different schema.
Writing: The students have been doing a great job so far with poetry! Last week, we put on our 'poet's hat' and described two objects around the school in exquisite detail - the fish tank in the lobby and one of the flowering trees outside (because poets use different words to describe everyday objects and events). The students are using very meaningful, powerful descriptions. This week, we'll spend time talking about how and why poets use line breaks effectively.
* Keep in mind that our poetry reading (to which all first grade families are invited) is the afternoon of May 14th.
Math: The students did a great job with fractions last week as we wrapped up unit 8. This week, we'll be starting unit 9, and discussing patterns on the number-grid that will help us add and subtract two-digit numbers.
Social Studies: Last week we painted our pinatas, and they look great! This week, we're going to create maracas and celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Have a great week!
