Week of May 26th

I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day weekends and were able to take advantage of the beautiful weather.  The last few weeks of school are going to be really tough if the weather stays this nice!

Last Friday, we went to the Discovery Lab and worked on our Science Celebration project.  The Science Celebration is the same night as Open House, so make sure you stop by the gym that night to see 1-Bu's board.

1-Bu has lots of exciting events coming up in the next couple of weeks.  This Thursday, May 29th, is Open House at 7pm.  Please make every effort to attend with your child(ren).  It is always one of my favorite events of the school year.  The students really shine and they LOVE showing their families
their classroom and work.

This Friday, May 30th, is the first grade field trip.  More detailed information will be coming home on Tuesday.  Please make sure to read i
t carefully so that your child is properly prepared.

Friday, June 6th
is the First Grade Poetry Reading.  Doors open at 1:15pm and the Reading will start at 1:30pm, in the gym.  All of the first graders have been working very hard writing poetry over the last few weeks.  Each first grader will bravely read a poem he/she has written.  Please note that the gym is not air conditioned and could be quite warm that day.

Here's what we've been working on in the classroom:

Reading : We wrapped up our inferring unit last week by talking about inferring underlying meanings in texts.  When you have discussions with your child about books, make sure you talk about deeper comprehension strategies, like inferring, in addition to basic comprehension strategies, like retelling the story.

Writing : Last week, the students spent time writing poems about special events and emotions.  They have written so many great poems that they are going to have trouble choosing just one to read at the Poetry Reading!

Math : We continued working on fractions and number grid puzzles last week.  You'll have to come to Open House to see  exactly what we've been doing. ;)

Sorry, no pictures this week.  Come to Open House and you'll see what we've been up to!
