Reading : Last week, we wrapped up our visualizing unit. The students have really blossomed this unit, and have used great inferencing skills to visualize beyond just the authors' words. Thank you to those of you who responded to my email about that tricky poem! The students are going to love hearing what everyone's families thought the poem was about. If your child hasn't filled you in yet, the poem was about a safety pin.
This week, we're going to talk about 'hunches' that readers have when they read. (This is when you're reading and you have a 'hunch' about what you think is going to happen next.)
Writing : We're going to continue working on our poetry unit this week by talking about writing poems about feelings and events. Up until now, we were writing descriptive poems about everyday objects, but now we're going to branch out a little bit.
Math : This week is going to be all about fractions. We'll start off by talking about equivalent fractions, and then we'll do a few projects involving fractions.
Odds and Ends : Please keep in mind two events that are coming up in the next month. Open House is during the evening on Thursday, May 26th. That evening, your child will have a chance to show off all the work he/she has been doing in school recently. The first grade poetry reading will take place during the afternoon on Friday, June 3rd. We'd really love to have you at this event, as each student has an opportunity to read a poem that he/she has written in front of everyone.
