Even with all of the fun of Read Across America week, we still had time to get some work done. Here's what we were working on last week:
Reading : We continued learning about nonfiction conventions last week. The students learned all about cutaways (which the author/illustrator uses to show the reader the inside of something) and maps. We also went over how to learn facts from the regular text on the page. The students have started to record some of the cool facts they've learned in their reading journals.
Writing : Writing took a little bit of a hit last week with all of the Read Across America activities going on, but we did spend some time learning about how to write more effective persuasive pieces. The students are learning about ways to bolster their arguments - watch out!
Math : We talked all about fact families last week. We started off learning about how the numbers on a domino relate to one another and then we transferred that thinking to fact triangles. Reviewing fact triangles are a great way for your child to practice his/her addition and subtraction facts at home.
Science : Since the students have been so excited about magnets, we spent some more time investigating them this week. The students explored how magnets can be both types of forces - a push or a pull. The students also explored magnetic strength, by seeing how many paperclips they could hang from various magnets.
1-Bu also went to the Discovery Lab last week to investigate balance. The students used various weights and objects to try to balance pan balances.
