Here's what we were working on in the classroom:
Reading : Last week, we talked about 'wonderings' the students had about the books they were reading. Wonderings are things that we wonder about before, during, and after reading. They're questions that we ask ourselves about the topic of the book we're reading (for nonfiction books, anyway).
Writing : After doing lots of prep work over the past couple of weeks, the students finally got a chance to start writing their all about nonfiction books last week. It took a lot of time to organize the facts they knew about their topics and organize them into the proper headings. Hopefully now that they've done all the hard, organizational work that these books will be a cinch to write! So far, the students have all written their tables of contents and at least the beginnings of their first chapters.
Math : Last week, we spent some time talking about shapes and their attributes. Then, we talked about defining attributes for certain shapes (or 'must haves,' like we call them in the classroom). For example, triangles must have three sides and three corners. They can be blue and they can be small, but those attributes are not what make it a triangle.
Social Studies : Last week, the students presented their culture dolls! They enjoyed seeing everyone's doll, and learning a little bit about everyone's culture. Thank you for all the hard work you put in at home.
