Last week, the students met and worked with their kindergarten Chromebook Cousins for the first time! Look at the end of this post for pictures. The first graders in 1-Bu taught the kindergartners in Ms. O'Reilly's class how to use the tools in Google Drawing to label a penguin.
Here's what else we've been working on inside the classroom :
Reading : We started our next reading unit, all about visualizing and inferring. We will work with poetry a lot this unit, as poets tend to use strong language that makes it easier to visualize and infer the author's meaning. Last week, we focused mainly on visualizing. We say that visualizing is when you use the words and your schema to create a picture in your mind. We also talked about imagining what the text sounds like, feels like, tastes like, and smells like.
Writing : We started our Nonfiction All About Writing Unit last week! So far, the students have brainstormed a list of topics they could write about. Then, they chose their topics and created 'webs' of facts they know about the topics. This week, they will start to organize the facts they wrote down into categories, which will hopefully turn into the sections in their nonfiction books.
Math : We talked all about fact families last week. We started off learning about how the numbers on a domino relate to one another and then we transferred that thinking to fact triangles. Reviewing fact triangles are a great way for your child to practice his/her addition and subtraction facts at home.
