Here's what we were working on in the classroom:
Reading : We finished off the rest of the non-fiction conventions this week by going over the index and the glossary. Now the students should have the tools to be able to read and understand nonfiction books a little bit better because they know about many of the conventions that nonfiction authors use to share facts with readers.
Writing : The students published their opinion pieces last week! This week we're going to start our next writing unit, which is an 'all about' nonfiction unit. Talk to your child about possible 'all about' book topics he/she could write about. What nonfiction topic does your child know a lot about?
Math : Last week, we focused on function machines. Sometimes they can get tricky if you are given the output and are asked to find the input. In school, we say that if they make you 'go backwards' through the function machine (meaning they give you the output), then you flip the sign of the rule (i.e. rather than adding, you would subtract and vice versa) to find the input.
Social Studies : Last week, the students presented their culture dolls! They enjoyed seeing everyone's doll, and learning a little bit about everyone's culture. Thank you for all the hard work you put in at home.
