This week, we have a Safety Assembly on Wednesday. It is also School Spirit Week. There is something special to wear for each day this week :
Monday : wear school colors - red and white
Tuesday : wear your favorite team jersey, hat, or colors (this can be a professional team or any team or group that your child is involved with)
Wednesday : wear tie-dye and peace signs for 'Peace Out Day'
Thursday : first graders wear red for 'Character Counts Day'
Friday : pajama day (your student may wear pajamas and bring slippers to change into in school, however he/she must wear appropriate outdoor footwear to school)
Reading : We're moving along in our schema unit, and will be discussion text-to-self connections this week. A text-to-self connection is when a story reminds you about something that has happened to you. For example, in the book Chrysanthemum, when Chrysanthemum's classmates make fun of her name, it reminds me about when I was in fifth grade and people made fun of my last name. This helps me realize how hurt Chrysanthemum must have felt, because something very similar happened to me.
Writing : This week, we will put all the finishing touches on our how-to books that we're publishing. All of the students have done a fantastic job!
Math : We're going to investigate comparison number stories this week, in addition to developing the concept of adding two-digit numbers using base-ten blocks. (More than likely, this is not the method that you are familiar with when adding two-digit numbers.)
Social Studies : First graders in River Edge become experts on Mexico. This week, we'll kick off our learning about Mexico by reading lots of books.
