Please don't forget that the students' Valentine Projects are due on Wednesday, February 10th. Thank you for those of you who have already handed them in!
Here's what we were working on in the classroom last week:
Reading : We continued talking about how meaningful text-to-self connections can help you understand a book. For example, if I'm reading a book about a character named Shelley and I make a connection saying "this reminds me of my friend named Shelley," it doesn't necessarily help me understand the book any better. Just knowing someone with a similar name to a character in a book is a coincidence. It would be a meaningful connection, however, if I was reading a book about someone whose friend baked her cookies when she was feeling down and I make a connection saying "this reminds me of when my friend made me cinnamon rolls when I was feeling down." This connection would help me understand the book at a deeper level because I would be able to relate to how the character felt when her friend cheered her up by baking her something.
On Friday, we also started learning about text-to-text connections. We'll keep working on them this week.
Writing : The students are having a lot of fun with our Opinion Unit. We've been working on using graphic organizers to help structure their writing. So far, the students are doing a great job filling in their graphic organizers.
Math : Math was all over the place last week! First, we talked about telling time to the hour. Then, we worked on solving two-digit number stories. After that, we wrapped the week up by talking different ways to use the equal sign in equations.
Science : We kicked off our next science unit in the discovery lab last week by talking about the two forces that make things move - push and pull.
