Last week we had a special lesson from Mrs. Blake and an assembly on fire safety. Mrs. Blake came into our classroom on Monday to read a book to us and teach us about being kind to one another. On Tuesday, Firefighter Phil came in for an assembly and used magic and funny puppets to teach us about fire safety.
On Friday, we celebrated our March birthdays by having a dance party. The students have grown to love these birthday celebrations and are no longer shy of their dance moves.
Otherwise, here's what we've been working on in the classroom:
Reading :The students did an amazing job completing their wondering boxes last week. They all came up with 'wonderings' (or research questions), found the answers, and then displayed their research in words and pictures. They even included the source that they found the information in! After they were done, they presented their research to the class. Ask your child what his/her wondering box was about.
Writing : We started our nonfiction 'all about' unit last week. The students will be writing books just like ones they've been reading during our nonfiction reading unit. So far, the students have created a list of topics that they are experts on, have chosen a topic to write about first, and then have created a web of information about that topic. Ask you child what topic he/she has chosen to write about.
Math : We had fun investigating attributes, shapes, and polygons last week. We learned that objects can be classified by many different attributes (size, color, shape, etc). We also reviewed two-dimensional shapes and discussed how many edges and corners each shape has. Then, the students loved learning about polygons. Ask your child what the 'polygon rules' are. (Polygons must have all straight edges, the edges may not overlap, and the shape must be closed.)
Word Study : We continued talking about inflectional endings last week. We learned about -est and -ing.
Odds and Ends : Please keep in mind that there is no school next week, April 8th - 12th.
