To go along with our mini multicultural unit in social studies, we were lucky to have two parent presentations. We learned all about Filipino culture and Korean culture. Thank you so much to those of you who came in and shared a little about your families' backgrounds with us. The students really enjoyed both presentations!
As I'm sure you've already heard, 1-Bu won the school eagle this month! Since we had such great participation dressing in all one color last week, 1-Bu's name was put in the lottery to win the school eagle for the month. The students were VERY excited to hear our class name on the announcement at the end of the day. Even though there were only five minutes of school left, and we still hadn't even packed up yet, 1-Bu insisted on going to get the eagle right away!
1-Bu continues to enjoy working with their kindergarten chromebook cousins. Last week, 1-Bu taught the kindergarteners all about the three main parts of a plant and showed them how to use various Google Drawing tools to draw plants of their own.
Here's what else we've been working on in 1-Bu :
Reading : We've been working on visualizing and inferring with poetry. Poets tend to use strong language that make it easier to visualize and infer the author's meaning, so we've been doing a lot of work with poems. The students spent a lot of time reading poems and being detectives, trying to figure out what the author of the poem was talking about.
Writing : The students are working on their nonfiction all about books. Ask your child what he/she is writing about! The students have created their tables of contents and learned about how to use various nonfiction conventions to share facts with their readers.
Math : Over the past couple of weeks, we've investigated shapes' attributes and function machines.
Science : In our life science unit, we've been talking a lot about baby animals and how they survive. The students were able to apply a lot of their learning to a real life scenario when we learned that there was a bunny nest on the playground. I was incredibly impressed with the conversations we had about the bunny nest, as the students were using all that they had learned in the classroom to understand what they were seeing in real life.
