Reading: Last week in reading workshop we changed reading spots and got 'official' reading partners. After independent reading, the students meet with their reading partners to read and discuss books. They spent a lot of time retelling books to each other last week. To support our retelling unit at home, have your child retell a book to you after he or she (or you) have read it. Before winter break, there will be a retelling information sheet in your child's binder to help aid in your support at home.
This week in reading, the students will be taking a close look at the characters in their books. We know that the characters are an important aspect of a retell, so now we're going to learn ways to get-to-know our characters even better.
Writing: At the end of last week, we started a new writing unit. We're working on creating 'how-to' books. These are books that teach someone 'how-to' do something. The students are really excited about writing these books!
Math: This unit is all about standard and non-standard units of measurement now. The students had a blast using their body parts to measure various objects around the room last week. This week we'll start moving into standard units of measure, and learn about the inch and the centimeter.
Theme Study: This week in our space theme study unit, the students will investigate the various phases of the moon. You can help support our study of moon phases by looking at the moon each night and discussing the changes you notice.
Extras: Now that the weather is getting colder, please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for going outside for recess.
