Please keep in mind that parent/teacher conferences are coming up the second week of December. An email from the main office went out late last week with directions about how to sign up. If you are having any trouble signing up, please reach out to the main office.
1-Bu had a lot of fun shopping at the Holiday Shop last week. Thanks for helping your child be prepared.
Here's what 1-Bu was working on in the classroom :
Reading : We've been focusing on strengthening the students' word decoding skills in books that they read. Last week we spoke about how there are some words that you should be able to read in a snap - sight words and words that you have figured out on previous pages. We've talked a lot about how we don't want to have to use all our brain power on figuring out tricky words, that we want to be able to dedicate some of our brain power to understand what's happening in the book. In order to do that, we have to make sure that we recognize words we already know and not sound those out. We also spoke about scooping up words together to read more fluently. At the end of the week, the students got new reading partners!
Writing : We began to wrap up our Small Moments writing unit last week by talking about how to make strong story endings. Each child has chosen a piece to publish and will be working on editing and revising it this week.
Math : In math, we took a deeper look at number lines and number grids. The students practiced skip counting on them and learned how to use them as a tool to help them solve various kinds of addition and subtraction problems. Mr. Werner, the math and science supervisor, also came in to lead 1-Bu through a fun number talk.
Phonics : Over the past few weeks, the students have learned about three glued sounds. There are some spelling patterns that slightly change the vowel sound associated with them, so we learn them as glued sounds (or groups of letters/sounds) to help us. So far, we've learned about all, an, and am.
