In 1-Bu, we got back to the grind last week. Here's what we've been working on:
Reading : We wrapped up our inferencing unit last week by talking about using the illustrations to deepen the inferences we make while we read. To practice this, we read Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg. This is a great book that forces readers to infer meaning beyond the text. Wordless picture books are also great books to do this with. Try finding a wordless picture book at the town library for your child to practice his/her inferring. All you have to have them do is tell the story using the pictures. Often wordless picture books have an incredible amount of detail, and if you look closely, there is a very complex story being told.
Writing : We started our new poetry writing unit last week! We kicked off the unit by taking some time to immerse ourselves in many different kinds of poems. We noticed lots of different things that poet Then, we started writing some poetry ourselves. Last week we worked on list poems.
Math : We wrapped up unit 8 last week by deepening our understanding of fractions by investigating equal shares. We used pattern blocks and geoboards to apply what we've learned.
Word Study : Adjectives were our focus last week. The students now know the three main types of speech - nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Adjectives will be very useful in our poetry unit.
