Read and Roll: If you have not done so already, please send in your child's December form. January forms will be coming home in this week's Thursday yellow folder.
Reading: The second issue of 1-Bu Reading News went into the students' binders this week. This newsletter recapped the retelling unit that we finished just before winter break.
This week, we started a new reading unit, which will focus on the students using their schema to comprehend text. We've talked a lot about 'real reading,' in opposition to 'fake reading.' 'Fake reading' is when you just read the text, but 'real reading' is when you read the words AND think about what you've read. As you read with your child this week, stop every once in a while and ask him or her what he or she was thinking. (Note, all kinds of thinking is great at this point. In the future, we will work on honing in on the 'best' kinds of thinking to do.)
Writing: We published our 'how-to' books! They're all hanging up in the hallway outside our classroom. If you get a chance to stop by, you should!
Towards the end of this week, we'll re-focus back on writing small moments pieces. I'm sure they all have things to write about from winter break!
Math: On Monday, I introduced telling time to the quarter hour. Please do not worry if your child is has not mastered this concept, as it was only an brief introduction and we will revisit it over the course of the year.
This week we're also working on time lines and number scrolls.
Extras: The January Scholastic book order form will come home on Thursday. Please see the Scholastic link on this website for information if you wish to order online.
